Russian President Vladimir Putin has submitted a security guarantee agreement with Belarus to the State Duma for ratification. The document, among other things, includes provisions for the use of nuclear weapons, according to TASS and Sputnik Belarus.
"To ratify the agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus on security guarantees within the framework of the Union State, signed in Minsk on December 6, 2024," the document submitted to the State Duma reads.
As reported by Sputnik Belarus, the agreement stipulates that Russia and Belarus consider an armed attack on a member of the so-called Union State as an act of aggression against the Union State as a whole.
Furthermore, the agreement provides that Russian nuclear weapons may be used if conventional weapons are employed against Russia or Belarus, and this "threatens sovereignty."
The document also outlines that military facilities could be created and Russian military formations may be deployed on the territory of Belarus.
Security guarantee agreement
The security guarantee agreement between Russia and Belarus was signed in Minsk at the beginning of December last year.
It outlines new measures that the two countries will implement in the event of a threat to sovereignty.
