Putin signs strategic partnership agreement with Iran
Russia has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Iran. Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the document today, according to Russian media.
The comprehensive strategic partnership agreement was agreed following talks in Moscow. The text of the document has not yet been published.
Prior to that, relations between Moscow and Tehran were based on a cooperation agreement of 2001. Active work on the new document began in January 2022, before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
After the signing ceremony, Pezeshkian said that Iran supports a political settlement of the Russia-Ukraine war.
“Fighting and war are not solutions. We welcome a political settlement between Ukraine and Russia,” he said.
About the agreement
Its content is unknown. Russian and Iranian officials have said that it covers various areas: economic, trade, energy, scientific, technological, and military.
According to Iran's ambassador to Russia, the document consists of a preamble and 47 articles that will define the countries' relations for the next 20 years. Officials from Tehran emphasized that it does not provide for making a defense alliance.
“The agreement covers security and defense cooperation, but it does not aim to create a military alliance,” said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
As The Times wrote, a few days earlier, Iran sent a secret mission to Russia to expand military cooperation and get help with its nuclear program.
In the summer of 2024, Putin signed a strategic partnership agreement with North Korea. After the agreement, North Korean troops were sent to help Russians in the Kursk region. According to the Ukrainian side, there are currently 11,000 to 12,000 DPRK troops there, and some of them are already engaged in assaults.
According to political strategist Taras Zahorodnyi, the partnership agreement between Iran and Russia will not affect the war against Ukraine. According to him, Tehran is already helping Moscow with everything it can without this document.
