Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in the election congress of the ruling United Russia party. He described the current period as fateful for the country, according to TASS.

Speaking to delegates at the congress, Putin said the West is allegedly unable to defeat Russia militarily and is therefore turning to other methods.

He also claimed that Russia is being tested and that there are attempts to "get rid of it" as a global power, which, according to him, has "always stood in the way of evil." The Russian president made the remarks in a country that is now in its fourth year of an unprovoked aggressive war against a neighboring state.

Putin called Russian soldiers fighting in the war against Ukraine the "true elite" of Russia.

Notable that in June, Ukraine implemented a record number of strikes on Russian defense plants, despite the Kremlin's claims of Ukrainian retreat.

Against this backdrop, Putin declared 2026 the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia—a framing widely used by the Kremlin to justify the continued war against Ukraine.
