A brazen Russian intelligence operation against the flagship Charles de Gaulle ended in second-hand embarrassment for the Baltic Fleet, according to Reuters.

The Swedish Ministry of Defense disclosed details of the incident at the port of Malmö, where a Russian drone attempted to spy on the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. Thanks to the vigilance of Swedish sailors, the covert mission of Russia’s Baltic Fleet was thwarted at an early stage.

The investigation showed that the operation had been carefully prepared: the electronic intelligence device was launched directly from the Russian reconnaissance ship Zhigulevsk (Project 503R). The Russian vessel maneuvered in the Baltic Sea, attempting to approach within UAV launch distance of the French flagship.

However, every move of the Russian intelligence vessel was already being monitored by the Swedish patrol boat HSwMS Rapp. The Swedish crew not only spotted the uninvited guest but also documented the moment the spy drone took off, depriving Moscow of the ability to deny its involvement.

Immediate neutralization

As soon as the drone approached the Charles de Gaulle, Swedish forces employed modern countermeasures. Although the military did not disclose whether the device was shot down or forced to land using electronic warfare systems, Vice Admiral Eva Skoog Haslum officially confirmed that the espionage equipment had been fully neutralized.

The vice admiral stated that they had demonstrated a high level of readiness to counter hybrid threats and that the Russian operation had failed thanks to the vigilance of their sailors.

Triumph of Swedish modernization

The main heroes of the interception were the Swedish Tapper-class boats. After undergoing a deep modernization in 2020, they received upgraded equipment that allows them to detect even small reconnaissance drones operating in radio-silent mode.

Consequences for the Kremlin:

  • Loss of confidentiality: Technical data from the Russian spy drone is now being studied by NATO specialists.
  • Reputational blow: Russia once again demonstrated aggressive intentions in EU territorial waters, prompting Baltic states to further strengthen coastal defense.
  • Security of the flagship: The aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle continues its mission under the reliable umbrella of its allies.

This incident has become further proof that the Baltic Sea has effectively turned into a NATO lake, where any attempt at Russian espionage is doomed to swift and professional suppression.
