Putin officially appoints new Russian ambassador to US

Dictator Vladimir Putin has appointed diplomat Alexander Darchiev as the Russian ambassador to the United States of America, the Kremlin’s official website reports.
"Appoint Alexander Nikitovich Darchiev as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States of America and the Permanent Observer of the Russian Federation to the Organization of American States in Washington," the statement says.
Darchiev has been in diplomatic service since 1992 and has previously worked at the Russian diplomatic mission in Washington in various positions.
From 2014 to 2021, he served as Russia's ambassador to Canada, after which he became the director of the North Atlantic Department. Between his appointments in diplomatic institutions, he was part of the leadership of the North America Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Situation with Russian diplomats in US
The previous Russian ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, completed his tenure in October 2024. He had led the Russian embassy in the US since August 2017.
Meanwhile, at a meeting in Saudi Arabia on February 18, the US and Russia agreed to restore the work of their embassies.
"We need to have active diplomatic missions that can function properly so that we can continue these contacts," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at the time.
