Putin brazenly uses BRICS to weaken the West and Ukraine - The Telegraph
Russian President Vladimir Putin is using the BRICS summit in Kazan to his advantage. He wants to weaken the West and Ukraine, according to The Telegraph.
The Russian city of Kazan is hosting the BRICS summit, which has brought together leaders from about 20 countries. The news agency called the summit a diplomatic coup for Putin. Putin is not being shunned as an international pariah but rather presides over a meeting of countries that represent about half of the world's population and about 30% of the world economy.
The BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as Iran and Egypt. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Türkiye, a NATO member, also came to Kazan. The presence of Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonstrates the importance of the summit, competing with the G7.
Most outrageous for Ukraine is that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was invited to the BRICS summit. In addition, several countries participating in the summit have ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which issued the arrest warrant for Putin.
According to The Telegraph, Putin is using the BRICS to show that he is not isolated and to weaken the influence of the West.
But Russia faces an obstacle, in particular, the fact that among the BRICS members, there are countries that will never agree with each other. For example, China and India, Saudi Arabia and Iran, and Egypt and Ethiopia are also unlikely to meet face-to-face. Unlike the G7, hostility between countries is likely to destroy Putin's aggressive ambitions.
“Nonetheless, this is a summit of great importance to the balance of global power and to the future of Ukraine,” the authors note.
The agency suggests that if Donald Trump wins the US presidential election, he will probably have the courage to stop supporting Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine is outraged by Guterres' invitation to Kazan.
“Most brazenly, the Russian leader has set himself up as a representative of post-colonialism even as he hosts a summit in an ancient Khanate annexed by Russia. Moreover, what else is the attempt to occupy Ukraine other than an imperialist venture?” the agency adds.
