According to the US Department of State, the United States has imposed visa restrictions on those responsible for and involved in undermining democracy in Georgia. These include ministers and law enforcement officials.

The United States of America has imposed visa restrictions on those responsible for and involved in the undermining of democracy in Georgia. These include ministers, law enforcement officials, and the US Department of State.

In total, restrictions were imposed on about twenty people, including:

  • ministers
  • members of parliament;
  • law enforcement and security officials;
  • private individuals.

“The United States strongly condemns the Georgian Dream party’s ongoing, brutal, and unjustified violence against Georgian citizens, including protesters, members of the media, human rights activists, and opposition figures. Georgian Dream has turned away from Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic future, which the Georgian people overwhelmingly desire and the Georgian constitution envisions,” the US State Department writes.

The United States is preparing additional measures, including sanctions, against those who undermine democracy in Georgia.

Protests in Georgia

On October 26, parliamentary elections were held in Georgia, during which the Georgian Dream party won. The opposition, in turn, refused to recognize the election results due to allegations of fraud and called for protests.

Later, the government refused to start negotiations on the country's accession to the European Union until the end of 2028. As a result, tens of thousands of people gathered in the center of Tbilisi, but were met with resistance from security forces.

On the evening of December 7, it became known that protesters and journalists were attacked by unknown groups of young men wearing balaclavas.
