President of Abkhazia resigns: Details
Recently, protests erupted in the occupied Georgian region of Abkhazia over an investment agreement with Russia. As a result, the so-called President of the Republic Aslan Bzhania has announced his resignation, according to the official Telegram account of the press service of the head of Abkhazia.
The statement said that the decision was made following negotiations between opposition representatives and the authorities of the republic.
According to the agreement, the protesters are required to leave the government complex in Abkhazia by November 19, today. If they fail to do so, Bzhania's resignation announcement will be revoked. Additionally, if the protesters comply with the demands, the parliament of Abkhazia will consider the resignation request.
In addition to the president, Prime Minister Alexander Ankvab will also resign, with replacements appointed for both positions. Specifically, the acting head of the republic will be Abkhazia's vice president Badra Gunba, and the new head of government will be former prime minister Valeri Bganba.
They will serve in these roles until the newly elected president of the so-called republic assumes office.
