Power plant hit in Russia's Rostov region, fire breaks out

In Novocherkassk, Russia’s Rostov region, a thermal power plant was attacked on the morning of January 12, according to the Astra Telegram channel.
Residents say emergency services promptly arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire.
As Astra writes, the source of the fire may have been the open switchgear of the Novocherkassk State District Power Plant (GRES). Through this facility, electricity from the plant is transmitted into the power grid.
Damage to the facility could significantly affect the operation of the power plant and the transmission of electricity to consumers.
About the Novocherkassk GRES
The Novocherkassk GRES is one of the most powerful thermal power plants in southern Russia. It consists of several power units and primarily operates on coal, using natural gas as a reserve and supplementary fuel.
Attacks on Russian cities
On the night of December 18, explosions were heard in Rostov-on-Don and Bataysk in the Rostov region. There were also reports of Russian air defense systems in operation.
Earlier, on the night of December 15, Rostov-on-Don had already come under a drone attack. The Russian side claimed the alleged destruction of dozens of drones, and an air alert was declared in the region due to the threat of UAV strikes.
Late in the evening of November 16, explosions were heard in the Russian city of Oryol. According to local sources, the target may have been the Oryol thermal power plant, as Telegram channels had reported the mass flight of drones toward the region the day before.
An attack on Oryol was also reported on November 13. At that time, explosions were heard during the announcement of a missile and drone threat. Local publics wrote about air defense operations, and debris from downed targets fell in residential areas, which was captured on video.
Several oil depots are located in Oryol.
