Potassium is essential for the proper functioning of the heart and the circulatory system. It is one of the most important minerals for the body, and notably, it can be found in many popular foods, according to nutritionist Iryna Levchenko.

Why potassium is important

Potassium plays a key role in muscle contraction and nerve conduction, making its concentration in the blood crucial for a person’s well-being.

It is one of the four main electrolytes present in the human body, alongside sodium, magnesium, and calcium.

A lack of potassium is particularly noticeable during hot weather, leading to weakness and unpleasant muscle cramps. This is how the body signals a deficiency.

If you've noticed that your legs have started to swell, especially in the summer, this could indicate a potassium deficiency.

To confirm whether you have an excess or deficiency of potassium, a blood test measuring this element is necessary.

Key functions of potassium:

  • Blood pressure regulation
  • Maintenance of acid-base and water balance
  • Assistance in kidney function
  • Transmission of impulses through neurons
  • Regulation of ion and water content in cells

It is important to remember that acute potassium deficiency during pregnancy can have serious consequences, including the development of hypertension, fetal hypoxia, and even premature birth.

Potassium-rich foods

The nutritionist identified the following as high-potassium food sources:

  • Potatoes, sweet potatoes
  • Bananas
  • Avocado
  • Pumpkin
  • Fatty fish
  • Quinoa
  • Poppy seeds
  • Legumes
  • Figs
  • Dried apricots, prunes
  • Tomatoes
  • Coconut water
