Popular Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis dies suddenly at 54

What is known about the circumstances of his death

According to Ekathimerini, the singer suffered cardiac arrest during a medical procedure at a private clinic in the Kolonaki district. After his condition suddenly deteriorated, he was taken by ambulance to Elpis Hospital. Doctors began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but the artist could not be saved.

An official statement from Elpis Hospital confirms that Mazonakis was brought in on September 9 at 4:45 p.m. without a pulse or signs of breathing. Resuscitation efforts were carried out in accordance with protocol, but they were unsuccessful. The official time of death was 5:40 p.m.

Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the tragedy. According to Greek media reports, the cardiac arrest occurred during plasmapheresis — a procedure in which plasma is separated from blood cells.

Who is Giorgos Mazonakis?

In 1993, the singer released his debut album, “Mesanihta Kai Kati” (“At Midnight and Something”). The following year, the album “Me Ta Matia Na To Les” helped him establish himself among popular Greek performers. One of his early major songs was “Mou Leipeis,” which later achieved gold status.

Over more than 30 years on stage, Mazonakis released numerous albums and dozens of hits. Among the songs he is most often associated with are “Savvato,” “Nikotini,” “I Kardia Mou,” “Leipei Pali O Theos,” “Kalos Sas Vrika,” “Terma,” “Agapo Simeni,” and others.

His album “Savvato,” released in 2003, went platinum.

Throughout his career, the singer performed not only in Greece and Cyprus, but also for the Greek diaspora in Germany, Australia and the United States.

He also collaborated with artists from various musical genres and took part in television projects, including as a coach on The Voice of Greece.
