A pharmacist has warned that one popular breakfast food that is often eaten in the morning should be avoided, as it can dramatically increase cholesterol levels, reports Mirror.

What food should you avoid for breakfast?

Whether you're eating a hamburger or cheese chips, certain foods are dangerous for high cholesterol.

However, the popular breakfast food can also do a number on your arteries.

Abbas Kanani, a pharmacist, warned that one food item that is often consumed in the morning should be avoided. Fortunately, he also suggested an alternative that is good for the heart.

"People with high cholesterol should avoid baked goods. They tend to be high in saturated fats, such as butter and oils, have added sugar, and are generally low in nutrients," the expert said.

Saturated fats contained in muffins increase "bad" cholesterol, also known as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL).

Excess of it in the blood can cause fatty substance to build up in the arteries, leading to clogging. This increases the risk of serious health problems such as heart disease and stroke.

To make matters worse, many people with high cholesterol don't even realize their levels are too high until they have these problems.

What kind of breakfast to choose

People with high cholesterol should choose plain white yogurt with heart-healthy toppings for breakfast.

"Berries, such as blackberries and strawberries, are especially good for you because they help lower blood cholesterol levels in your body," the expert said.

If you can't do without sweets at all, add a small amount of honey, which can also be beneficial and help improve cholesterol levels.
