Pope may support Trump's plan for Ukraine's concessions to Russia, says Hungarian Ambassador
Pope Francis may support a peace agreement, which is likely to help US President-elect Donald Trump convince Ukraine of the need for territorial concessions to Russia, according to Hungarian Ambassador to the Vatican Eduard Habsburg, reports The Independent.
According to the ambassador, the pontiff's recent visit to Hungary demonstrates his sympathy for the country and a common desire to end the war in Ukraine. He noted that against this background, Pope Francis can support a peaceful solution that NATO and most European countries do not back.
“With the new President Trump, we have an ally who has clearly stated, even in his speech during election night, that he wanted to end the wars, which also means the one in Ukraine. This fills me with hope,” the ambassador said.
Habsburg says that during the last Trump presidency, political relations between Hungary and the United States were at their peak.
“Following the decision of the American electorate a few days ago, we really have good hope that Hungarian-American political cooperation will return to its peak: we share similar views on peace, illegal immigration and the protection of families. I believe there is a better chance than ever that peace will finally return to Ukraine after almost a thousand days of war,” Habsburg said.
Settlement of Russia's war against Ukraine
Earlier, Donald Trump repeatedly stated that he could stop Russia's war against Ukraine in just one day. According to media reports, he considered an option in which Ukraine would have to cede part of its territories.
Recently, the British media published a new version of Trump's peace plan, which provides for the deployment of European troops in the buffer zone between Ukraine and Russia.
