Polish Foreign Minister explains his statement about placing Crimea under UN control
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that he supports Ukraine's territorial integrity. His proposal to place Crimea under UN mandate was made within the context of a hypothetical discussion, according to Onet.
According to him, there is no doubt that Poland supports Ukraine's territorial integrity, and he has spoken about this multiple times.
"On the other hand, at the conference (in Kyiv - ed.), there was a hypothetical discussion among experts in an off-the-record manner, where we considered how to implement the proposals from President Zelenskyy regarding the return of Crimea. He spoke about diplomatic actions," Sikorski added.
What preceded it
Last week, during his visit to Kyiv, Sikorski stated that one of the options regarding Crimea is to place the peninsula under UN mandate. This, according to the Polish official, would be necessary to "conduct a fair referendum."
After this, the head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Refat Chubarov, emphasized that such a proposal from the Polish Foreign Minister is unacceptable.
Chubarov noted that the Polish official effectively suggested that Ukraine hand Crimea over to Russia.
In turn, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry added that Crimea will always be Ukrainian and that there is no room for compromise on this issue.
