Police detained man with loaded weapon near Trump's rally
On Saturday, US presidential candidate Donald Trump held another rally. Nearby, police detained a man who was found with a loaded firearm, reports Associated Press.
According to the Associated Press, a man with a shotgun, a loaded pistol, and ammunition in his vehicle was arrested at a checkpoint for the rally near Trump in Southern California.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department stated that the suspect was a 49-year-old resident of Las Vegas who was driving a black SUV and was stopped by police in Coachella (east of Los Angeles).
According to the department, the man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm and a high-capacity magazine.
"This incident did not impact the safety of former President Trump or attendees of the event," the statement said.
Later that day, the man was released on a $5,000 bond. He is now scheduled to appear in court on January 2, 2025.
Associated Press added that after the incident, media representatives and VIP ticket holders were directed through several intersections monitored by state and local law enforcement officials, eventually arriving at a large grassy area where drivers were asked to open their hoods and trunks, and each vehicle was searched by a K-9 officer.
Other general ticket holders were directed to a lot about 3 miles from the rally site, where they were boarded onto buses and taken to the venue.
Trump's campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the arrest.
