Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has proposed that the West intercept Russian drones and missiles in Ukrainian airspace, Tagesschau reports.

The proposal came after Russian drones entered Polish airspace.

Sikorski said he personally believed the idea should be considered. He added that, technically, NATO and the EU could carry it out, but Poland could not act alone and would need to coordinate with its allies.

The minister also called for a joint effort to counter Russia's shadow fleet in the Baltic Sea. Germany or NATO could set up a maritime control zone in the North Sea to monitor the entry of these aging ships into the Baltic Sea.

He warned that if even one of these Russian ships, two of which had already sunk in the Sea of Azov, were to sink in the Baltic Sea, it could cause an environmental disaster of unprecedented scale.

Russian drones in Poland and the Sky Shield initiative

On the night of August 10, when Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine, about 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace.

Poland scrambled combat aircraft and shot down Russian targets for the first time. Air defense forces reportedly destroyed four drones. Fragments of 16 more have been recovered.

After the incident, NATO launched Operation Eastern Sentry. Today, it was reported that the Polish president signed a resolution approving the deployment of NATO troops to Poland.

Le Monde also reported that hundreds of European and American politicians support Ukraine's Sky Shield initiative. The program would allow Europe to shoot down Russian drones and missiles over western and central Ukraine.
