Poland's agriculture minister to meet farmers over Ukraine border blockade
Poland's Minister of Agriculture, Czesław Siekierski, will meet with farmers who are protesting at the border with Ukraine. They are blocking truck traffic, reports RMF24.
Czesław Siekierski will meet with a group of farmers blocking the Medyka - Shehyni border crossing with Ukraine.
According to reports, Polish farmers are protesting for two reasons that are not directly related to Ukraine. The first is the failure of the Polish government to meet tax requirements. The second concerns concerns over the European Union's agreement with South American countries (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay).
Earlier, Sekerka stated that the Polish Ministry of Agriculture opposes the MERCOSUR agreement. He reminded that Warsaw and Paris plan to block the import of products that do not meet European safety standards.
Sekerka emphasized that the Polish government is developing an official position on this issue, which will be presented for discussion on Tuesday, November 26.
Border blockade with Ukraine
Polish farmers launched a new wave of protests at the border with Ukraine on Saturday, November 23. They partially blocked the Medyka - Shehyni crossing.
Farmers are restricting truck traffic, while other vehicles can cross the border without restrictions.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Agrarian Policy informed RBC-Ukraine that Polish farmers have no claims against Ukraine. According to the Ministry, the farmers are using the border blockade as a tool to put pressure on their own government.
