Poland extends border checks with Germany and Lithuania until April 2026

Poland will continue border control with Germany and Lithuania for another six months, until April 4, 2026, according to a statement by the country's Ministry of Interior and Administration.
It is reported that Marcin Kierwiński, the head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, signed a regulation extending temporary border control at the borders with Germany and Lithuania. It will come into force on October 5 this year and extend control for another six months – until April 4, 2026.
"We are extending control to monitor the migration route that leads from the Baltic countries through Poland to Western Europe. We identify individuals attempting to smuggle migrants illegally into the West. The key task for the border service remains maintaining the integrity and protection of the border with Belarus from migration pressure," said Kierwiński, as quoted on the X platform.
At the beginning of July, it was announced that Poland would resume control of its borders with Germany and Lithuania. This is intended to help combat illegal migration.
The Polish right-wing party PiS submitted a bill to the Sejm that would tighten the rules for obtaining a Polish passport for foreigners. The reason cited was "migration threats," including a rise in crimes among foreigners.
