Poland and Lithuania to conduct exercise in vulnerable-to-Russia-attack zone
Lithuania and Poland have planned joint military exercise in the Suwałki Corridor. The location of this area is highly vulnerable in the event of theoretical aggression by Russia on the eastern flank of NATO, according to Delfi.
An agreement has been reached for a joint military exercise in the Suwałki Corridor between Lithuania and Poland. The location of this area is highly vulnerable in the event of theoretical aggression by Russia on the eastern flank of NATO, according to Delfi.
The agreement was made during a meeting between presidents of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, and Poland, Andrzej Duda.
"I am very happy that the Polish president has responded very vividly to that desire to have a joint exercise in this area of land called the Suwalki Corridor. We are already talking about a very specific date, it could probably take place in April," said Nauseda.
In response, Duda emphasized that Poland takes the defense of the Suwałki Corridor very seriously and has already taken necessary measures for it.
"Over the last year, we have been restoring Poland's defense capabilities in the eastern part of our country, that is where new units are being established, and we are restoring the capabilities of the units that have been present in Bartoszyce, Grajewo, and other places all along the way, and we are strengthening Poland's military presence and also strengthening border protection," said the Polish leader.
The Suwałki Corridor is a 100-kilometer stretch of the border between Lithuania and Poland, bordered to the west by Russia's Kaliningrad region and to the east by Belarus. In the event of a hypothetical war, Russian forces could quickly occupy the Suwałki Corridor, cutting off NATO allies' overland route to the Baltic States.
The last joint exercise between Lithuania and Poland took place in early July 2023 in Klaipeda, where special forces from both countries trained in restoring captured critical infrastructure objects.
Assistance from Lithuania and Poland to Ukraine
On Monday, January 22, on Fox News, Andrzej Duda stated that continued assistance from the United States is the only hope for Ukraine to defeat Russia and the way to avoid a major war outbreak in Europe.
The day before, Duda expressed hope for a meeting of the Lublin Triangle countries shortly.
Gitanas Nauseda, on the other hand, stated that Europe should play a more active role in providing military assistance to Ukraine.
