The ideal bed height can positively affect sleep quality, as it makes it easier to fall asleep and creates comfortable conditions for rest throughout the night. It’s important to know how to correctly measure the optimal bed height, according to Real Simple.

Is there an ideal bed height?

There is an ideal bed height, but it varies for each person. Children are shorter and lighter, so lower beds make it easier for them to get in and out.

Many children’s bed frames are also not designed for very thick mattresses.

Adults, on the other hand, need taller and thicker mattresses for proper support, which increases the overall bed height. For most adults, a mattress thickness of 30–35 cm works best.

As a result, the total bed height typically falls within the range of 43 to 56 cm, where comfort, support, and ease of movement are balanced.

How bed height affects sleep

Bed height itself does not directly affect sleep quality, but the position created by that height does. A properly chosen mattress and base help maintain spinal alignment and reduce pressure buildup during the night.

For example, a thinner mattress may lead to a lower overall bed height, which can cause discomfort and reduce durability.

In addition, if the bed is too low, it may lead to excessive sagging or make it harder to get in and out comfortably. On the other hand, a bed that is too high can put extra strain on joints or make it difficult to sit properly, especially for shorter people.

How to determine the right bed height for you

Knee height is a great way to determine whether a bed is too high or too low. Sit on a chair with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle and measure the distance from the floor to the underside of your thigh. This measurement gives a good estimate of the ideal combined height of the mattress and its base.

Your feet should rest flat on the floor when sitting on the edge of the bed, without sliding or straining to stand up.

Keep in mind that you should also account for a box spring if you use one.
