The Pentagon is discussing the possibility of renaming the US military operation against Iran in the event of a final collapse of the ceasefire regime. The new name could be Sledgehammer, according to NBC News sources.

According to the TV channel's sources, Washington fears that the ceasefire between the parties may not hold, and hostilities could once again enter a phase of large-scale escalation.

The current name of the US operation against Iran is Epic Fury. Last year, after US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, the operation was named Operation Midnight Hammer.

As NBC News notes, a possible name change could have not only symbolic but also legal and political significance, particularly in the context of the US administration's authority to conduct military operations without separate congressional approval.

Amid the unstable ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, the US continues to strengthen its military presence in the Middle East. This involves deploying air defense systems and aviation to the region due to the risk of a new conflict.

Latest on the war in Iran

As is known, a ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran is currently barely holding. However, if it is violated, Iran has promised to intensify its nuclear program, which is unacceptable to the United States.

Recently, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth also stated that the Pentagon is developing a plan to strike Iranian facilities in the Strait of Hormuz in the event the ceasefire collapses.

Israel, which entered the war against Iran on the same day as the US, fears a failed deal between Washington and Tehran.
