Peak day is near: When solar flares may hit and how to prevent migraines

The Sun continues to show unstable behavior, so weather-sensitive people should stay alert, as even a moderate magnetic storm can affect well-being.
RBC-Ukraine, citing the monitoring center SWPC (Space Weather Prediction Center), shares a detailed storm calendar and advice on how to protect blood vessels during this period.
Magnetic storm calendar: detailed forecast
According to astrophysicists’ forecasts, space weather at the end of May will remain unstable. However, after prolonged solar flares, the Sun is finally giving us a short break:
May 25. The start of the week will pass without unpleasant surprises. Solar activity will remain at a safe level — only 2 points (green level). The body will function normally, making it a great time for active work.
May 26. The magnetosphere will remain fully stable. Indicators will stay within the normal range (2 points), allowing the body to regain strength before the change in space weather.
May 27. Attention, peak day. According to preliminary forecasts, a moderate magnetic storm is expected on this day (Kp-index 4). Weather-sensitive people may experience mild discomfort, drowsiness, and blood pressure fluctuations.
May 28–29. Weak fluctuations (Kp-index 3). The magnetic storm will begin to weaken, but residual activity may still cause mild fatigue toward the end of the work week.
What is a magnetic storm?
When solar flares occur on the Sun, clouds of charged particles are ejected toward Earth. Their collision with our planet’s magnetic field creates disturbances in the atmosphere.
This not only causes spectacular auroras but may also directly affect blood viscosity, vascular tone, and the human nervous system.
Who is at greatest risk?
Even moderate geomagnetic fluctuations (Kp-index 4) and stronger red-level storms (5 points and above) may pose risks for certain groups of people:
- Those recovering from surgeries or serious illnesses
- Weather-sensitive and meteodependent people
- People with chronic cardiovascular diseases or hypertension
- Elderly people and pregnant women
- Those experiencing chronic stress or severe fatigue
Most common symptoms
During periods of increased solar activity, the body may signal discomfort through the following symptoms:
- Headaches: from mild pressure in the temples to severe migraines
- Blood pressure fluctuations: sudden spikes and pulsation, even in people who usually do not experience such issues
- Weakness: feeling of a “heavy body,” rapid fatigue, and joint aches
- Sleep disturbances: difficulty falling asleep at night or overwhelming daytime drowsiness
- Anxiety: unexplained tension, irritability, or apathy
How to protect yourself: expert advice
To minimize the effects of a magnetic storm — especially on the peak day, Wednesday, May 27 — doctors recommend following several simple rules:
Avoid stimulants. During these days, coffee, strong black tea, energy drinks, and alcohol are your main enemies. They create additional strain on already stressed blood vessels.
Stay hydrated. Drink more plain still water or herbal teas (such as chamomile or lemon balm). This naturally thins the blood and makes the heart’s work easier.
Minimal physical activity. Avoid heavy strength training at the gym. The best option during these days is a slow evening walk in the park in the fresh air.
Follow a special diet. Completely avoid salty, spicy, smoked, and fatty foods. This helps prevent fluid retention, swelling, and sudden blood pressure spikes.
Keep medications nearby. If you have chronic conditions, make sure your regular medications for blood pressure, heart pain, or migraines are within reach and available in sufficient quantities.
