PACE deputies elected Assembly's President: Results announced
The newly elected President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is the representative of Greece, Theodoros Rousopoulos. He is also a representative of the European People's Party, according to the PACE Twitter.
"Congratulations to Theodoros Rousopoulos from Greece, who has just been elected as the Assembly's President!" - the message says.
As noted, Rousopoulos is the 35th president of PACE since 1949 and the first citizen of Greece to hold this position.
His term of office is one year and can be extended for another 365 days.
PACE President elections
Before him, this position was held by Tiny Kox. He served as the President of PACE for two consecutive years. During last year's elections, the results of which became known in January 2023, Ukrainian MP from the "Servant of the People" party Oleksandr Merezhko also ran for this position.
PACE became the first international organization to recognize the regime in the Russian Federation as a terrorist.
