A meeting between the leaders of the United States and Russia within the framework of the Budapest Peace Summit on Ukraine could take place any day, but several issues still need to be resolved first.
This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, according to his interview with Magyar Nemzet.
According to Orban, if several outstanding issues are resolved, the summit will take place, and an agreement to establish peace in Ukraine could follow soon after.
"There are still several unresolved issues in the negotiations between the United States and Russia. If they are settled, the Budapest Peace Summit could be held within a few days, and then, depending on the parties’ agreement, a ceasefire and peace could be achieved," the Hungarian prime minister said.
Collapse of Budapest Summit and Trump-Orban meeting
In mid-October, US president Donald Trump held another phone conversation with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
Shortly afterward, he announced plans to hold a leaders’ summit later this year in Budapest. However, the meeting was called off after Russia refused to alter its stance on the conditions for ending the war in Ukraine. Trump did not rule out a future meeting with Putin at a later date.
A meeting between Trump and Orban is scheduled for November 7. Ahead of his trip to Washington, the Hungarian leader announced that the war in Ukraine would be one of the key topics on their agenda.
