Orbán wants to lift EU sanctions against Russia due to new Trump era
The European Union should lift sanctions against Russia as Donald Trump's administration is ready to usher in a new era starting next week, Telex reports.
“It's time to throw sanctions out the window and create sanctions-free relations with the Russians,” Orbán said on state radio.
According to Orbán, this will take time, but sobriety will come to Brussels, but they are currently in the phase of getting over it.
Orbán said that everything would change after Donald Trump comes to power. “From Tuesday, a new era will begin in the Western world,” he said. According to him, four years ago, the presidency was allegedly stolen from Trump.
“In 2020, if they hadn't cheated, Donald Trump would have remained president, and there would have been no Ukrainian-Russian war,” Orbán said.
Sanctions and Hungary's veto
The EU has approved 15 packages of sanctions against Russia following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and is working on a 16th package of measures. The EU extends the existing sanctions every six months, and this requires a unanimous decision of the 27 member states.
According to Hungary's Minister for EU Affairs János Bóka, the country has not yet decided whether to support the extension of EU sanctions against Russia and believes that the EU should make a decision only after consulting with the new Donald Trump administration.
However, according to the Financial Times, the EU is considering options in case Hungary vetoes the extension of sanctions against Moscow.
We are talking about 190 billion euros in the Euroclear depository located in Belgium. If the sanctions are not extended, this money will be in Russia the next day as there will be no reason to keep it.
