Orbán’s rival slams Russia over intelligence agency statement

The main opponent of Hungary’s current Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Péter Magyar, lodged a protest with the Russian ambassador in Hungary following a statement by Russian intelligence about alleged plans by the European Commission to “change the regime in Budapest,” according to Magyar’s post on Facebook.
As Magyar noted, a document from the Russian intelligence service, published on August 13, baselessly claims that the EU and its leaders allegedly aim to make him the next prime minister of the country and are mobilizing “material, media, and lobbying resources” to achieve this.
The opposition politician called such statements an unacceptable interference in Hungary’s domestic political processes.
Magyar also emphasized that this was an attempt to influence Hungarian voters, distort public debates, and undermine trust in their democracy, and that the sovereignty of Hungary belongs exclusively to the Hungarian people.
The opposition politician demanded public explanations from the Russian embassy and clear guarantees that Russia will refrain from similar actions in the future, including disinformation campaigns, cyber operations, or pressure on political figures.
Magyar stressed that the inviolability of democratic processes is a basic condition for any bilateral cooperation between countries.
What precedes it
In Hungary, opposition politician Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza party and the main rival of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, launched his election campaign. He emphasized that his party has every chance of defeating Orbán in the 2026 elections.
In response, Orbán intensified his own information campaign. In particular, in July, posters and videos appeared across the country portraying Magyar as the “Hungarian Zelenskyy” and a puppet of external actors, alongside the Ukrainian President himself.
Earlier, Péter Magyar stated that he does not support a fast-track accession of Ukraine to the EU. At the same time, he acknowledged Russia as an aggressor.
