OpenAI has announced the removal of text chat limits for all ChatGPT users. The changes come alongside the launch of the new GPT-5.6 model family, according to OpenAI.

What's changing for free and Go users

For users on the Free and Go plans, GPT-5.6 Luna is now the default model, replacing GPT-5.5.

Key changes include:

  • Unlimited text chats;
  • A new Think button that unlocks additional reasoning power for more complex tasks;
  • Separate limits will still apply to files, images, voice features, and image generation.

According to OpenAI's internal testing, GPT-5.6 Luna makes 62% fewer factual errors than GPT-5.5-Instant. Unlimited chats and the Think button will roll out to users next week.

New features for Plus and Pro subscribers

Paid subscribers now have access to GPT-5.6 Sol, an upgraded model designed for everyday tasks such as web search, research, planning, writing, and decision-making.

According to OpenAI, the model makes 68% fewer factual errors than the previous generation.

New features for Plus and Pro users include:

  • Thinking slider – lets users manually adjust the amount of reasoning power and processing depth based on the complexity of a prompt;
  • More concise responses – the model delivers shorter, better-structured answers without unnecessary introductions;
  • Error correction – instead of simply agreeing with incorrect user statements, the model now suggests corrections when it detects false information.

The updated GPT-5.6 Sol is available to Plus and Pro subscribers starting today. OpenAI noted that this is a separate version from the GPT-5.6 Sol model used in Codex and Work, which remains unchanged.

Smarter resource management

The new models are designed to tackle long-standing chatbot issues, including overly verbose answers and AI "hallucinations."

The new reasoning controls also help optimize OpenAI's server resources by allocating more computing power only when it's needed for complex prompts.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT's integration with Apple's Siri remains a separate project. These AI model updates do not directly affect Siri, although the ChatGPT apps for iOS and macOS will receive the new capabilities.
