If you want to add not only years but also health to your life, a well-known Italian scientist recommends a simple rule.

Men’s Health explains what exactly should be done for a long life.

How to live as long as possible – the main rule

97-year-old oncologist and pharmacologist Silvio Garattini believes that moderate calorie restriction can significantly extend life.

The scientist, who founded the Mario Negri Institute in Bergamo, has spent decades researching aging and chronic diseases.

“If you eat 30% less, you can live 20% longer,” he said.

According to him, moderation in nutrition is the key to active longevity.

Garattini emphasizes that a healthy lifestyle reduces not only personal risks but also the burden on the healthcare system.

According to the World Health Organization, poor nutrition causes millions of deaths worldwide each year, mainly due to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer.

The scientist himself follows a balanced diet: he eats a variety of foods to get all micro- and macronutrients, but without overeating.

Studies published in Ageing Research Reviews and The British Journal of Nutrition confirm that moderate calorie reduction without nutrient deficiency improves aging indicators and reduces the risk of premature death.

Despite the popularity of intermittent fasting, Garattini believes that the overall amount of food matters more than the timing of meals.

“The main thing is to eat less,” he concludes.

Experts also note that calorie control and a balanced diet are among the most effective ways to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and maintain activity in older age.
