On Wednesday, February 11, 13 Ukrainian athletes competed at the Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Despite the lack of medals, the day was marked by personal bests and athlete solidarity.

RBC-Ukraine reports on the Olympic triumphs and the situation in the medal standings.

Historic records and sensations

Swiss athlete Franjo von Allmen caused a real sensation by winning the super-G.

He became the first skier in more than half a century to win three gold medals at a single Olympics.

A unique achievement was also recorded in women’s biathlon: France’s Julia Simon and Lou Jeanmonnot secured a winning double ("gold" and "silver") in the individual race — something that has not happened in 20 years.

Ukrainian performances: Merkushyna's success and Shepiuk's statement

Ukraine was represented by 13 athletes in four sports. Although there were no podium finishes, strong personal results were recorded:

Biathlon: Oleksandra Merkushyna delivered the best result of her career, finishing 17th in the individual race. Khrystyna Dmytrenko finished right behind in 18th place.
Luge: The women’s crew of Olena Stetskiv and Oleksandra Mokh finished in the top 7.
Alpine skiing: Dmytro Shepiuk (36th result) held a support action for skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych, showing the message "Ukr heroes with us" after the IOC banned patriotic symbolism on helmets.
Nordic combined: Dmytro Mazurchuk and Oleksandr Shumbarets finished in 27th and 30th positions, respectively.

Updated medal standings (Top 5)

Thanks to double success in luge, Italy jumped from seventh to third place. The USA climbed to second place, pushing competitors down.

  1. Norway — 7 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze (13)
  2. USA — 4 gold, 6 silver, 2 bronze (12)
  3. Italy — 4 gold, 2 silver, 7 bronze (13)
  4. Switzerland — 4 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze (7)
  5. Germany — 3 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze (8)

Today, February 12, the Ukrainian luge team will compete in the team relay, where Yulianna Tunytska, Andrii Mandzii, and two doubles crews will represent Ukraine.

Earlier, we reported who is depicted on Heraskevych’s helmet, which was banned by the IOC.
