Nutritionist recommends foods to protect against cystitis and other infections
Cystitis causes severe pain during urination, as well as an increase in body temperature and general weakness. A dietitian shared which products can reliably protect the body from this infection, the website Daily Express reports.
What foods to eat
Dietitian Emma Derbyshire emphasizes the importance of diet for maintaining immune health. Since cystitis is caused by an infection, it is essential to support the immune system's health.
Follow a healthy and balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. This can help maintain a healthy immune system.
In addition, those who frequently suffer from cystitis should pay special attention to their diet. Key foods that contain nutrients for immune function include vitamin C, which can be found in berries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and broccoli, while vitamin B12 is contained in meat, dairy products, eggs, and fish.
Sources of vitamin B6 include whole-grain bread, meat (especially pork), fish, bananas, and fortified breakfast cereals. Vitamin D is present in only a few foods (oily fish such as salmon and sardines).
Increase the number of healthy bacteria in your gut by consuming natural yogurts or other fermented foods, such as kefir, kimchi, or sauerkraut, or take probiotic supplements. This may help strengthen gut health and immunity and reduce the risk of cystitis.
Cranberry juice is sometimes recommended to ease cystitis, as it reduces the adhesion of Escherichia coli bacteria to the urinary tract.
Ways to fight cystitis
Take a shower before and after sex to prevent bacteria from entering the bladder.
Drink plenty of fluids; this will help flush bacteria from the bladder. Water and natural juices, such as cranberry juice, which has antibacterial properties, are especially useful.
Reduce irritants: avoid coffee, alcohol, spicy foods, and other products that may irritate the bladder.
It is important to note that these methods may help alleviate symptoms but do not replace a consultation with a doctor.
