Nutritionist names signs of high cortisol and why it is important
Cortisol is a hormone responsible for regulating the body's stress response. Significant stress leads to increased cortisol release, which can even cause facial swelling. This phenomenon has already been dubbed "cortisol face."
Nutritionist Oleh Shvets explains how elevated cortisol levels manifest in the body and why it's important.
Stress and cortisol
Experts say that while the hormone can influence facial appearance to some extent, the mechanisms behind these changes are quite different. Cortisol stimulates the sebaceous glands, which can lead to clogged pores and worsened acne.
However, everyday stress doesn't raise cortisol levels high enough or long enough to cause significant facial swelling or puffiness. In cases of swelling, reducing salt intake, drinking more water, and ensuring adequate sleep is recommended.
People with Cushing's syndrome, who have chronically high cortisol levels, and those who take steroids over long periods, may develop what is known as a "moon face," where fat accumulates on both sides of the face, giving it a rounded or swollen appearance.
Signs of elevated cortisol levels
Natural fluctuations in cortisol levels throughout the day are normal. Blood, urine, or saliva tests are typically used to measure cortisol levels. Some signs can indicate excessively high levels (such as in Cushing's syndrome) or excessively low levels (as in adrenal insufficiency).
Common signs and symptoms of elevated cortisol include:
- Weight gain, particularly in the face and abdomen
- Fat deposits between the shoulder blades
- Wide purple stretch marks on the abdomen
- Muscle weakness in the upper arms and thighs
- High blood sugar
- Hypertension
- Excessive hair growth on the face, chest, and back
- Weak bones and fractures
Symptoms can vary depending on how elevated cortisol levels are. If you notice persistent swelling of the face, abdomen, or legs, consult a doctor to rule out serious conditions.
Remember that a healthy lifestyle is crucial for maintaining cortisol levels within the optimal range. This includes balanced nutrition, avoiding harmful habits, getting enough sleep, and regular physical activity. Sleep is particularly important for cortisol, so make sure you're getting enough rest.
