Nutritionist names fish dangerous for human health
Fish is highly beneficial for the body, but certain types can be dangerous. It's all due to contaminated water bodies, as this is not just an ecological issue, but a much broader one, according to nutritionist Tetiana Yarmoshuk.
Why some fish are dangerous
According to the nutritionist, it's dangerous because fish and seafood from polluted water bodies accumulate heavy metals, which then end up on the table and in the body.
The expert also named fish species that are particularly contaminated and may pose a danger to health. Fish with high levels of mercury or other heavy metals include:
- Swordfish
- Shark
- Halibut
- Pangasius
- Tilapia

Which fish is safe
Atlantic bluefin tuna is the largest tuna, and the larger the fish, the more heavy metals it accumulates. When buying canned tuna, pay attention to the type you are purchasing.
Albacore and skipjack tuna are safer options. It's worth choosing tuna in brine because you cannot control the quality of the oil, and due to prolonged storage, the oil may start to oxidize, making such a product unsafe for consumption.
"Consuming these types of fish once is unlikely to affect your health in any way, however, regular consumption can do significant damage," the statement said.
Over 90% of the fish on the shelves of the stores come to us frozen and then thawed. Finding fresh fish is rare because it spoils quickly.
This is exactly why the most beneficial fish is the one that is most readily available to each of us, like herring and mackerel for instance. Such fish is suitable both in canned form and in brine.
