Nutritionist explains why cutting out fat is bad idea
Most people who want to lose weight give up fat in their diet. This approach can really give results, but at the same time, it can also be very harmful to health, according to nutritionist Svitlana Fus.
What you need to know about fats
"The membrane of every cell in our body consists of lipids. It protects all the life support structures that are inside the cell from the influence of harmful substances. If the cell membranes are not functioning well, minerals and vitamins enter our cells with difficulty, even if we use them additionally in the form of drugs, waste products are poorly excreted," the nutritionist explains.
She adds that this is why lovers of fat-restricted diets, who take "fat-burning" drugs, should know that in this way they prevent their cells from functioning normally, keeping them on vitamin and mineral starvation.
"And if they achieve the desired result, then at the expense of health. Fats also support the health of the skin, eyes, and other tissues because they are part of the membranes," says the expert.
The nutritionist also notes that sex hormones are synthesized from cholesterol in the body of men and women, and if there is not enough fat in the diet, the synthesis of testosterone in men and estrogen in women is disrupted.
"It is important that the fats are of good quality and to know how much each specific person needs, taking into account his physical parameters, type of activity, physical load," the doctor emphasizes.
In a healthy diet, an adequate amount of fat should be 30% of the daily caloric intake.
"The level of total fat that can be consumed per day for a person on a 2,000-calorie diet is 70 grams. Of course, this number can vary from person to person," says the specialist.
She notes that experts at the US Food and Drug Administration state that a person consuming only 1,500 calories per day may need a maximum of 50 to 55 grams of total fat per day. Otherwise, a higher or lower number of fats in the diet will lead to metabolic disorders, provoke an increase in fat reserves in the body and may cause health problems.
