Number of Ukrainians having suffered from mines since start of war revealed
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, over a thousand people have been affected by landmines, including 100 children, citing the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety.
"As of November 1, 2024, since the start of the full-scale invasion in Ukraine, 1,068 people have been affected by enemy mines and explosive remnants of war, including 100 children and 968 adults," the report says.
The Mine Action Directorate also specified that among the affected are:
- 199 farmers;
- 80 retirees;
- 112 critical infrastructure workers;
- 79 drivers;
- 90 students.
Ukrainian law enforcement has opened criminal cases against Russian forces for violating the rules and customs of warfare following each incident of Ukrainian civilians injured by Russian landmines.
Notably, in early October, it was reported that Russian occupiers began camouflaging anti-infantry high-explosive mines to make them even less visible.
The enemy covers these mines with adhesive and then coats them with soil, dust, or leaves, making them resemble stones or debris.
