'Not political' reason: Hungary explains postponement of German Foreign Minister's visit
The visit of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to Hungary was canceled not for political reasons but postponed to a later date, according to Reuters.
The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the German side was asked to postpone the visit due to an "unforeseen change" in the schedule of Minister Peter Szijjarto.
"The reason is purely technical and not political," the ministry said.
It should be noted that the day before, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it was "astonished" by the cancellation of the visit and that a "serious and honest" discussion about the meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Vladimir Putin is necessary.
Yesterday's meeting was the first since April 2022. Some EU leaders criticized it, warning against attempts to appease Moscow. It was also reported that Orbán was not authorized to speak on behalf of the EU.
Conflict between Germany and Hungary
Earlier, Bloomberg reported on a conflict between Germany and Hungary. According to the publication, Baerbock's visit was canceled because Chancellor Olaf Scholz criticized Orbán for his trip to Moscow.
Baerbock was supposed to meet with Peter Szijjarto, who accompanied Orbán the day before. However, the Hungarian government unexpectedly canceled the meeting, which unsettled the German side.
US President Joe Biden also criticized the Hungarian Prime Minister. And stated that the meeting with Putin would not promote peace in Ukraine.
