Most women experience discomfort during menstruation; however, some symptoms may go beyond the normal range. A doctor explains which menstrual signs should not be ignored, according to gynecologist Olena Yatsenko.

Signs of menstrual problems

According to the doctor, the following symptoms during menstruation should raise concern:

  • a pad becomes fully soaked in less than 2 hours
  • the need to use both a tampon and a pad “to manage everything.”
  • menstruation lasts more than 8 days
  • blood clots larger than 2 cm
  • waking up at night to change a sanitary product

“If you recognize at least 2 of these symptoms, it is a signal to see a doctor. This is not just ‘your body being like that’ — it may indicate a hormonal imbalance, endometriosis, or other conditions that should be detected in time,” the post says.

Myths about menstruation

Pain during periods is normal for everyone

This is not true. Mild discomfort or pulling sensations may be considered normal.

However, severe pain that forces you to miss work or school or requires a large number of painkillers is not normal. It may be a sign of endometriosis, adenomyosis, or other conditions and requires medical examination.

Menstruation should always be the same

The doctor explains that the menstrual cycle can change due to stress, weight, physical activity, hormonal changes, and age.

If these changes do not affect quality of life, they are acceptable. However, sudden changes or heavy bleeding should prompt a visit to a doctor.

The more blood during menstruation, the better — because the body is cleansing itself

It is important to understand that menstruation is not a detox process, but a natural shedding of the endometrium.

Normal blood loss per cycle is about 30–80 ml. Excessive menstrual bleeding can lead to anemia, weakness, and may signal hormonal disorders or uterine pathology.
