Norway plans to significantly strengthen its border with Russia by building a new fence and deploying drones for monitoring, according to Dagens.
Norway has announced a large-scale modernization of its 198-kilometer border with Russia, including the installation of new fences, the deployment of surveillance systems, and the use of drones to enhance monitoring capabilities.
According to the Norwegian Police Department, fences will be installed at key points, including Skafferhullet, a former border crossing in Sør-Varanger, and Storskog, Norway's only official border checkpoint with Russia.
Officials said modern sensors and surveillance cameras will also be deployed to monitor activity along the border.
The chief of police in Finnmark County, Ellen Katrine Hætta, stated that drones may be used in certain sections of the border to enhance aerial surveillance.
The new border fence at Skafferhullet alone will cost around 400,000 euros. Oslo has already secured funding from the European Commission amounting to approximately 16.4 million euros to support the larger project.
Norway had already begun constructing a higher and more secure fence in Storskog earlier this year in response to what Oslo considers an escalation of the threat from Russia.
Nils Andreas Stensønes, the head of Norwegian intelligence, previously stated that Russia poses the most significant security threat to Norway.
Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that his country is in a constant conflict with the West. At the same time, Stensønes said he does not consider the current situation to be equivalent to a state of war.
