By the end of the week, geomagnetic conditions could change noticeably. After a relatively calm period, experts forecast rising solar-wind activity.
RBC-Ukraine explains what to expect from geomagnetic activity through the end of the week.
Geomagnetic storms on November 5–8
According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center forecast published on November 5, 2026, the most noticeable fluctuations are expected ahead of the weekend and on Saturday.
The forecast maximum Kp values are:
-
Thursday, November 5: 3.67. Moderate fluctuations, with no geomagnetic storm.
-
Friday, November 6: 4.67. Activity could intensify to G1 levels late in the evening.
-
Saturday, November 7: 5. A minor geomagnetic storm is forecast.
-
Sunday, November 8: 2. Geomagnetic conditions are preliminarily expected to remain calm.
The highest activity is forecast for the night of November 6–7.
What Kp index means
German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) explains that the Kp index measures disturbances in Earth's magnetic field. It is calculated using data from ground-based observatories over three-hour intervals.
The scale ranges from 0 to 9. Values below 5 do not qualify as geomagnetic storms, while values of 5 and above correspond to storm levels G1–G5.
G1 is the lowest level, while G5 indicates an extreme geomagnetic storm.
Are forecast geomagnetic storms dangerous?
According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction classification, G1-level disturbances can cause minor fluctuations in power grids and affect satellite operations. Auroras may also occur at high latitudes during such events.
As for their effects on people's well-being, convincing evidence that geomagnetic fluctuations directly cause headaches, changes in blood pressure, or sleep disturbances remains insufficient.
The US Geological Survey notes that Earth's magnetic field does not directly affect human health.
Therefore, you should not automatically attribute a decline in well-being to space weather. If unusual or severe symptoms occur, look for the actual cause.
