Russia’s war against Ukraine could last at least another one to two years due to the lack of breakthroughs both on the battlefield and in negotiations, Bloomberg reports.

As the outlet writes, hopes for a diplomatic resolution are fading as the U.S. and Israeli strike on Iran has absorbed the attention of US President Donald Trump. Talks between Ukraine and Russia led by the United States have reached a deadlock, with little sign they will resume soon.

Meanwhile, the outlet’s sources in the Kremlin say the Russian army is preparing for a new offensive campaign.

“Without a breakthrough in negotiations, the war may drag on for another year or two,” one of the sources said.

According to another source, progress is likely to remain minimal, as Russian forces are unable to break through Ukraine’s drone-based defensive wall.

Peace talks

At present, US-mediated negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine are effectively on pause.

In January and February, several rounds of trilateral meetings involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia took place, but they produced no concrete results.

The next meeting, planned for early March in Abu Dhabi, was postponed indefinitely due to escalating tensions around Iran.

On March 21–22, bilateral talks between Ukrainian and US delegations were held in Miami without Russia’s participation.

Following those talks, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that there has been no real progress in the peace process due to Russia’s unwillingness to end the war.

In Moscow, officials made their own statement regarding the US-Ukraine talks.

Meanwhile, the United States believes it can hold negotiations between Russia and Ukraine despite Washington’s shifting focus to the Middle East.
