Night drone attack on Ukraine: Air defense operation report
On the night of September 16, Russian forces launched a massive attack on Ukraine using Shahed drones. Between 8:00 PM on September 15 and 6:00 AM on September 16, Ukraine’s Air Force radio-technical units detected and tracked 56 enemy drones launched from Russian territory (Kursk and Yeysk), citing the Ukrainian Air Force.
The primary target of the Russian attack was the Kyiv region.
To repel the assault, Ukraine deployed aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups from the Air Force and Defense Forces.
As a result of successful actions by Ukrainian defenders, 53 attack drones were destroyed across various regions, including Kyiv, Cherkasy, Vinnytsia, Poltava, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, and Dnipropetrovsk.
Three additional drones were lost in undetected areas but did not cause significant damage or casualties.
Night attack on Ukraine
On the night of September 16, air raid sirens were sounded in Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and other areas due to the Russian drone strike. Air defense systems were activated in the capital and the surrounding region, with explosions reported. Explosions were also heard in the Khmelnytskyi region.
Air defense forces shot down nearly two dozen enemy drones in the airspace around Kyiv. Preliminary reports indicate that there were no casualties or significant damage in the capital.
