The future flagship of the Ukrainian Navy, the Hetman Ivan Mazepa corvette, will be used for several tasks. It is expected to enter service this year, says Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk in an interview with Suspilne Crimea.

According to him, Türkiye is completing the first Hetman Ivan Mazepa corvette, which Ukraine is scheduled to receive in 2024.

"This is a combat unit that can perform various tasks - protection of the water area, coastal waters, fighting surface ships, reconnaissance, air defense cover," Pletenchuk said.

He also added that the corvette was modernized several times during construction, taking into account Ukrainian combat experience.

"Therefore, some design changes were made to this corvette. Now the crew is undergoing training, this process is very long," added the spokesman.

What is known about corvette

Hetman Ivan Mazepa (F211) is an Ada-class anti-submarine corvette Türkiye is constructing for Ukraine. It is intended to replace the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate as the flagship of the Ukrainian Navy.

The corvette was laid down in September 2021. In October 2022, the corvette was launched at a shipyard in Istanbul.

The ship is expected to be equipped with a Harpoon or NSM missile system. It was confirmed earlier that it would be equipped with MICA VL vertical launchers of short-range anti-aircraft missiles.

There will also be anti-submarine weapons - hydroacoustic stations, two torpedo launchers, and two anti-torpedo defense bombs. The artillery armament includes a 76-mm gun and two modules for 12.7-mm machine guns.

In May, the Hetman Ivan Mazepa corvette underwent its first trials. Ukrainian crews are already undergoing training.
