Royal Air Force fighters intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea that violated Polish airspace on June 13, according to Polskie Radio.

A representative of the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, Jacek Goryszewski, noted that the violation of the country’s airspace lasted approximately several dozen seconds.

The Russian reconnaissance aircraft IL-20 was about 2 kilometers above Polish airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Goryszewski added that Poland’s allied forces responded swiftly to the incident. Several British fighters were scrambled from the Malbork airbase to intercept, after which the IL-20 returned to Russian airspace.

It was noted that this was yet another provocation by Russia, testing NATO’s readiness.

Russian aircraft incursions into NATO airspace

Recently, there has been an increase in cases where Russian aircraft have violated the airspace of NATO member countries.

In May, fighters intercepted a Russian Su-24, which was performing dangerous maneuvers near the Polish border.

NATO aircraft were also scrambled after a Russian Su-35 fighter violated Estonian airspace. This occurred in the area of the Juminda Peninsula.

Last week, British fighters also intercepted two Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea.
