Musk vs. Altman - AI leadership battle heats up

Two tech giants, Elon Musk and Sam Altman, found themselves once again at the center of a public conflict on Tuesday, August 12, exchanging accusations about trust in their artificial intelligence (AI) platforms, according to Axios.
The day before, Elon Musk accused Apple of violating antitrust laws, claiming the company is creating conditions where no AI company other than OpenAI can take the top spot in the App Store.
"xAI will take immediate legal action," Musk declared.
In response, Sam Altman hinted that Musk allegedly manipulates the X platform (formerly Twitter) for his benefit, harming competitors and those he dislikes.
Later, Apple’s press service stated in an evening statement that their App Store operates fairly and without bias, offering thousands of apps through rankings, algorithmic recommendations, and expert selection - all based solely on objective criteria.
In response to the dispute, Grok, the AI platform powered by Musk’s xAI, sided with Altman, highlighting Musk’s history of altering X’s algorithms to promote his posts and interests, as evidenced by 2023 reports and ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, ChatGPT’s official X account replied succinctly with: "good bot."
Additionally, Musk shared a screenshot showing him asking ChatGPT 5 Pro who is more trustworthy - himself or Altman. The AI answered: “Elon Musk.”
Conflicts between Altman and Musk have been ongoing for several years. After Musk left OpenAI’s board in 2018, they have repeatedly clashed over leadership in the artificial intelligence field.
Moreover, in 2024, Musk sued OpenAI and its founders, accusing them of deception, but a federal court denied the request to halt OpenAI’s transition to a commercial model.
In February, the dispute between Altman and Musk flared up again as both competed for influence over the US presidential AI strategy. It’s known that Musk planned to buy OpenAI for $97.4 billion, but Altman refused.
Some conversations with ChatGPT may appear in Google search results.
By the way, experts warn that AI cannot always replace humans, and in certain fields, relying solely on AI can be risky.
