If you're aiming to take good care of your skin, you probably take cleansing quite seriously, as it's one of the most important steps in any skincare routine. Typically, this involves washing your face with a skin-friendly cleanser containing ingredients to remove makeup.

Livestrong magazine will tell you about the mistakes women make when cleansing their skin.

Main mistakes in skincare

Over-cleansing

If you're dealing with breakouts or excess oiliness, there might be a temptation to wash your skin frequently to achieve a squeaky-clean feeling.

However, this can lead to increased breakouts, oiliness, and irritation. It's recommended to cleanse your skin once in the morning and once in the evening, with the only exception being if you've engaged in sports or for some other reason require washing your skin for a specific purpose.

Evening cleansing is particularly important as it allows you to remove makeup, dirt, debris, dead skin cells, and everything else that has come into contact with your skin throughout the day.

Using too many products on the skin

Sometimes, more doesn't mean better, and this is often the case when it comes to certain skincare ingredients.

This is especially true when it comes to active ingredients or ingredients you apply to address specific skin concerns, such as retinoids for wrinkles or salicylic acid for acne.

Cleansing the skin only once a day

Similar to how over-cleansing is a problem, not cleansing often enough can also be an issue. When you go throughout the day and touch your face and other surfaces, a thin layer of sweat and dirt accumulates on your skin. That's why it's best to cleanse your face in the morning and evening.

Washing the skin with soap

Soap may be ideal for washing the body, but not for the face, which consists of more sensitive skin cells that require a specific pH to prevent irritation.

Soap can make the pH of your skin more alkaline, disrupting the skin barrier and making it more susceptible to dryness and irritation.

Don't forget to moisturize

It's important to remember to moisturize after cleansing, as cleansing can remove oils and residue from the surface of your skin, leaving it dry and tight. Applying a moisturizing lotion or cream after showering replenishes essential oils lost during cleansing.

Ingredients such as ceramides, lipids typically present on your skin, help maintain the integrity of the skin barrier.
