Moldova gets new government: PM vows to strengthen security amid Ukraine war

The new government was approved by 53 lawmakers from the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS).
Addressing parliament, Tofan said his cabinet would focus on five key priorities: economic development, using EU integration to modernize the country, improving the efficiency of public administration, strengthening security, and raising citizens' quality of life.
On the economy, the prime minister pledged to cut red tape for businesses, expand the digitalization of public services, attract investment, and develop high-value-added industries.
He also stressed the need to overhaul support for the agricultural sector. Instead of primarily compensating farmers for losses, the government should invest in irrigation, modern technologies, and the development of the food processing industry, he said.
Tofan also announced an audit of state institutions, the elimination of overlapping responsibilities, and more efficient management of state-owned assets.
At the same time, he said Moldova must strengthen its security amid the war in Ukraine and the risks of foreign interference.
In addition, Tofan said the government aims to conclude negotiations on Moldova's accession to the European Union and sign the country's accession treaty by the end of 2028.
He added that the government's performance would be measured by investment levels, business growth, export expansion, and improvements in the quality of public services.
Earlier, Moldova's Intelligence and Security Service Director Alexandru Musteață warned that Russia had already launched a campaign to destabilize the country and was preparing to interfere in the next parliamentary elections.
According to Musteață, the Kremlin has intensified disinformation campaigns and is seeking to undermine public trust in state institutions.
