Any mineral agreement between Ukraine and the United States must be compatible with European legislation, states German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, according to Sky News.

According to Baerbock, the European Union previously agreed with Ukraine that any new agreement must be compatible with EU legislation.

"After all, this is our European continent... We are, of course, also in dialogue with all stakeholders accordingly," she noted.

Mineral agreement

The US recently submitted a new version of a mineral resources agreement for Ukraine’s consideration. This is now a full-fledged agreement rather than the framework agreement that was previously planned.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that legal experts still need to review the document. It includes certain details that had previously been rejected by both sides.

The head of state also emphasized that Ukraine will not sign the agreement if it entails any debt to the US.

According to Zelenskyy, the agreement will also not be signed if it jeopardizes Ukraine’s EU membership.

More details on what the US has proposed to Ukraine can be found in RBC-Ukraine’s report.
