The death toll from the crash of a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft into a school in the capital has risen to at least 27, BBC reports.

Cause of crash

According to the Bangladesh Armed Forces, the plane crash occurred due to mechanical failure after takeoff of the training aircraft, which was performing a training mission.

The F-7 aircraft took off from the Air Force base in the capital Dhaka, at around 10:00 a.m. Kyiv time and soon crashed in the Uttara area. The pilot, who also died in the crash, attempted to steer the aircraft toward a less populated part of the city.

Casualties

Due to the crash, at least 27 people were killed, including about 17 children.

At least 170 people were injured. According to a local doctor, most of the injured are children aged between 10 and 15. Many of them sustained burns from aviation fuel.

More than 50 people were taken to the hospital, many of whom are in critical condition.

As previously reported, in mid-July, a small business jet crashed at London Southend Airport in the UK.
