US Senator Michael Bennet has officially announced his candidacy for Colorado governor in 2026, positioning himself as a leading Democratic voice against Donald Trump’s political resurgence, reports AP News.

After more than 16 years in the Senate, Democrat Michael Bennet is turning his attention to his home state.

Known for his moderate stance and policy-driven approach, Bennet is entering a crowded field to replace outgoing Governor Jared Polis.

He believes that leading Colorado is the most effective way to protect democratic institutions and economic fairness.

"There is not a person in the Senate who’s more worried about what Trump is doing to our democracy and our economy than I am," Bennet said.

"I have come to believe strongly that the best place to fight that fight is from the state of Colorado." His main policy goals include removing bureaucratic barriers to affordable housing, making healthcare more accessible, and expanding the child tax credit.

Frustration with Washington and vision for Colorado

Bennet’s decision reflects a broader trend of prominent Democrats leaving Congress to seek executive positions in the states.

He has voiced frustration over Congress’ gridlock, particularly in moments of international urgency like securing aid for Ukraine. Despite his high-profile roles in Washington — from immigration talks to child welfare legislation — Bennet feels he can make more tangible change at the state level.

A former Denver Public Schools superintendent and one-time presidential candidate, Bennet emphasizes forward-thinking solutions: "The Democratic Party has to figure out what it is we’re going to offer going forward… how we are going to create an economy again in America that, when it grows, it grows for everybody."

At his campaign launch in Denver’s City Park, Bennet is set to announce endorsements from local Democrats as he positions himself as a practical, future-oriented leader.

If elected, Bennet’s departure could open a new chapter for younger Colorado Democrats eyeing the US Senate.

In a similar shift, Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire announced in March that she will not seek re-election in 2026. While stepping away from office, she, like Bennet, has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump — condemning his budget cuts, political retaliation, and hostility toward Ukraine.
