About 30 Georgians, along with citizens of other countries, have been held by a Mexican drug cartel for 3 days, reports Georgia Online.
According to the television channel Mtavari Arkhi, the abduction took place near the Mexican border. Among the abducted are women. The company reported that the Georgians have been confined in the basement for three days already.
The kidnappers demand $90,000 for the release of the individuals. According to the channel Pirveli, $45,000 has already been transferred for the release of half of the people. The negotiations continue.
"We knew he was supposed to move [to the US] on the 14th," said an anonymous respondent to Mtavari, adding: "The phone was disconnected since the 14th, he was out of reach for 2 days, we couldn't get in touch with him."
"The embassy is in contact with the Mexican immigration service to obtain additional information and clarify the possible whereabouts of citizens. The embassy continues to maintain communication with the family members of citizens, with those who have contacted the embassy to establish the whereabouts of a family member," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
