The new Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, may take a step during his visit to Kyiv to demonstrate his support for Ukraine by promising weapons supplies, according to Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, quoted by Tagesschau.

The Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany said that he expects Merz to pledge new arms deliveries to Ukraine during his visit to Kyiv.

"I am confident (of this – ed.)," the ambassador said in response to a question from German journalists in Kyiv but did not provide any details.

As the DPA news agency previously reported citing government circles, the new German government wants to keep arms deliveries to Ukraine secret. The main goal of this decision is “to deprive the aggressor of a military advantage in the war against Ukraine.”

Coalition of the Willing in Kyiv

Friedrich Merz officially took office as head of the German government this week. Following his appointment, the new German chancellor has already visited France and Poland. He arrived in Ukraine on May 10.

Other leaders of the Coalition of the Willing also came to Kyiv with Merz – French President Emmanuel Macron, the Prime Ministers of the UK and Poland, Keir Starmer and Donald Tusk.

According to Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, important meetings will be held today and important decisions are expected. Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak stated that today there would be “a lot of work and many topics for discussion.”
